János Beér is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His resarch interests include clean fossil energy electric power generation, turbulent combustion of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels, and the reduction of air pollution emission from flames by combustion process modification. His awards include the US Department of Energy's Homer Lowry Award (2003), the George Westinghouse Gold Medal of ASME International (2001), and the Energy Systems Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (1998). Dr. Beér holds a Dipl.-Ing. from the Technical University of Budapest, and a Ph.D. and D.Sc. from the University of Sheffield, England.

Professor Cleveland is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy (Elsevier, 2004), winner of an American Library Association award, the Dictionary of Energy (Elsevier, 2005), Handbook of Energy (Elsevier, forthcoming), and is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earth.
