Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965) successfully led England through World War II while acting as Prime Minister of the country. Churchill had a reputation not only as a gifted statesman and inspiring war leader, but also as a great orator and author, recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. He unified the British people with his stirring oratory, energy, and resolve. In 1911 he was named First Lord of the Admiralty. In that capacity, Churchill, fearing conflict with Germany during World War I, hastened the conversion of British battleships from coal to oil because oil-powered ships had proven to be faster and more maneuverable. Such ships could also be refueled at sea and required less on-board labor. The Royal Navy eventually overcame the largely coal-based German fleet in World War I.
