Jean Le Rond D'Alembert (1713-1783), French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher who first discovered and solved the wave equation. D'Alembert also helped resolve the mathematical physics controversy over the conservation of kinetic energy by improving Isaac Newton's definition of force in his work Traité de dynamique, published in 1743. He was a pioneer in the study of partial differential equations and their applications in physics. D'Alembert was editor of the famous 28 volume Encyclopédie, for which he was also the lead contributor of mathematical and scientific articles.
