Doherty, Henry L.

Henry L. Doherty (1870-1939), an American businessman and utilities expert, formed the holding company Cities Service Co. in 1910, which later became CITGO. Doherty played a pivotal role in the development of the gas and electrical utility industry in the U.S. He helped devise rate structures for natural gas markets and pioneered the use of a well-trained sales force to promote the use of appliances that used gas and electricity. As head of Cities Service Company, he built a vast public utility holding company in the central United States that included Kansas City and Denver.
