In Memoriam: Stephen Nodvin

Dr. Stephen Nodvin passed away on June 6th, 2010.  We would like to honor his contributions to the Encyclopedia of Earth and his dedication to our shared goals of environmental education. Stephen was an amazing asset and promoter of the Encyclopedia of Earth and a highly valued contributor and editor. He will be missed greatly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.

Stephen, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Encyclopedia of Earth, was an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Sciences at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. He previously held positions at Mount Ida College in Newton, MA and the University of Tennesse, Knoxville.  He earned a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University. In the mid-1970s, as an Emory University undergraduate, he held an internship within the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During his varied career, Stephen served as a government researcher and administrator, a college professor and administrator, a business owner and entrepreneur, and a technical consultant.

In his considerable volunteer work with the Encyclopedia of Earth, Stephen served as co-editor of the Collection on Climate Change and also wrote the collection's main article on global warming. His colleagues at the EoE mourn his passing and remain inspired by his strong enthusiasm for and dedication to environmental education and outreach.

In Memoriam: Juan Pablo Arce

Juan Pablo Arce passed away on September 26th, 2009.  We would like to honor his contributions to the Encyclopedia of Earth and his dedication to conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean.   But more importantly we would like to remember this warm and caring man whose infectious laughter touched us all.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Juan Pablo Arce had over 20 years of experience working in conservation and the international development field focused primarily in Latin America.  In Bolivia he worked as the Vice-Minister of Natural Resources and Environment under the Sustainable Development and Environmental Ministry and as Chairman of the Board for the National Trust Fund for the Environment (Fondo Nacional para el Medio Ambiente).   In the United States he was the Director of the Latin America and the Caribbean Department at NatureServe.

Juan Pablo was a very active member of the Encyclopedia’s Editorial Board.  He spearheaded the Latin America and Caribbean collection and before his death Juan Pablo was working on creating a sustainable Bolivia collection for the Encyclopedia of Earth.  We hope his legacy will live on not only through his family and friend but through his contributions to the EoE.
