Georgescu-Roegen, Nicholas

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1906-1994), a Romanian-born mathematician and economist, was the first to formally demonstrate the thermodynamic foundations of the economic process. In 1971, he published The Entropy Law and the Economic Process, in which the second law of thermodynamics plays a central role in production theory, with implications for the sustainability of economic growth. Although generally ignored by mainstream economics, this work became a cornerstone for the fields of ecological and evolutionary economics.
