Hazardous Materials Transportation Uniform Safety Act of 1990, United States

The Hazardous Materials Transportation Uniform Safety Act (HMTUSA) of 1990 amended the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) of 1975 and changed the authority status of the Secretary of Transportation under the HMTA from discretionary to mandatory. The statute authorizes the Secretary to provide uniform highway routing regulations. Under HMTUSA, any carrier of hazardous material is required to have a federal permit providing specific information on the material being transported. The Act also includes the regulation of radioactive materials.
