John S. Hoffman, as Director of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Division at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), developed innovative programs for energy efficiency that were emulated worldwide. He conceived, tested, refined, launched, and managed the Green Lights, Energy Star, and Natural Gas Star programs. Energy Star designation is given to energy efficient equipment and buildings. The Energy Star Computers label, given to office equipment that goes to a lower power state when not in use, is now on more than 60% of the combined shipments of printers, computers, and monitors in the U.S. and is being licensed in Japan and Europe. Hoffman also managed EPA's ozone protection efforts under the Montreal and London Protocols to phase out ozone-depleting substances.
