Hyman George Rickover (1900–1986), an American admiral who spearheaded the development of nuclear marine propulsion. After World War II in 1946, he was assigned to the atomic submarine project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he promoted nuclear sea power as a feasible option for the navy. He led the effort to develop the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, Nautilus (SSN-571), which was launched in 1954. As Vice Admiral of the U.S. Navy, Rickover had a tremendous influence on ship propulsion, quality control, personnel selection, training, and education, as well as far-reaching effects on the defense establishment and the civilian nuclear energy industry.
