Biography:

Brian Black is Associate Professor of history and environmental studies at Pennsylvania State University at Altoona, Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the landscape and environmental history of North America. He is author of PETROLIA: The Landscape of America's First Oil Boom (Johns Hopkins) and various reference books on environmental history. Currently, Black is completing projects on preservation at the Gettysburg Battlefield and on the early planning history of the Tennessee Valley Authority. His primary area of on-going research, though, is petroleum and energy history. Dr. Black has a B.A., in English, Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA, May 1988; a M.A., American Civilization, New York University, New York, NY, May 1991; and an Education PhD., American Studies, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, May 1996. Fields: U.S. history; architectural history; environmental history; cultural geography.
