Dr. Deron Burkepile is a community ecologist with research experience spanning many habitats from freshwater to marine to terrestrial ecosystems. His main research focuses on the importance of herbivores and predators to the structure and fucntion of ecosytems. Although his background is in the ecology of marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs, Dr. Burkepile's most recent research has been on the synergistic impact of megaherbivores (elephants, rhino, zebra, wildebeest) and fire on the structure of plant communities in African savannas. Dr. Burkepile earned his Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) before doing his postdoctoral research at Yale University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University.
