Espen Sjaastad is an associate professor at the Centre for International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), Agricultural University of Norway. He has conducted research on links between rural livelihoods and the environment, on the economics of land tenure and land reform, on rural exchange systems, and on violent conflict. His field research has been concentrated in East and Southern Africa, particularly Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa.
