Biography:

James (Jim) Dontje is the Compton Chair in Ecological Design at Berea College. In addition to teaching sustainability and ecological design classes, he also is a consultant for campus and community sustainability efforts. While at Berea, he has served on several planning and design committees, including the Campus Master Plan Steering Committee, the Energy Master Plan Steering Committee, and the committee planning the renovation of Lincoln Hall, the first LEED certified building in Kentucky. Jim holds an undergraduate degree in Physics from Luther College and his graduate education was in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Before coming to Berea, he did community development work with the Mennonite Central Committee in Burkina Faso, West Africa and Papua, Indonesia. His research and professional interests include renewable energy, with a current focus on biofuels and solar thermal energy, and using nonlinear time series analysis to explore ecological dynamics. Jim also serves on the board of the Madison County Habitat for Humanity chapter.
