Professor of Economic Environment in the different master programmes at Instituto de Empresa, Professor Javier Carrillo has dedicated the last few years to researching sustainable technological change and new management models that respect the environment. In his own words, “The industry is based on the revolution that took place two centuries ago, since when few companies have considered new ways of doing things. Eco-intelligent innovations are more than just improvements in environmental and eco-effective management. To achieve eco-intelligence we have to alter the design criteria of a product, renegotiate relations with suppliers, develop new skills in human resources, change the company’s technology and its manufacturing processes, as well as develop new relations with clients. Obviously, changes on this scale meet with numerous obstacles, due both to technologies currently in use and the organizational and institutional context in which they take place”.

Professor Carrillo has used the Instituto de Empresa Centre for Eco-Intelligent Management to channel his efforts into his studies of companies that are at the forefront in the field of environmental sustainability and which organize sector-specific meetings and summits where leading corporate, academic and political players meet.

His advances in the field are expounded in numerous articles and works on sustainability, technological change and economic development, published in specialized journals like the Journal of Energy Policy; Ecological Economics; Journal of Cleaner Production; Journal of Economic Issues; Journal of Asian Business; Revista Política Exterior; and Revista Interdisciplinar de Gestión Ambiental and Revista Cooperación Internacional. Furthermore, he contributes regularly to leading Spanish national newspapers and participates as a speaker in conferences on business and environment.

Professor Carrillo holds a doctorate in Economics from Universidad de Alcalá, and he is Master of Business Administration (MBA) with Honours by the Instituto de Empresa Business School.
