After graduating, in 1974, from the Institute of Agricultural Technology in Algeria where he received his B.Sc., Lakhdar Boukerrou served as a cereal breeder and later was promoted to the position of Director of the second largest research station in Algeria. He attended the University of Minnesota where he received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in plant breeding in 1986. Following his graduation from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Boukerrou worked for Pioneer Hi-Bred International in the US and the Middle East. He later joined the Barley Breeding Program at the University of Minnesota as a Post-Doc.

From 1988 to 1991 he served as Senior Scientist and later as Vice President at Agricultural Custom Research and Environmental Studies, Inc. where he oversaw the implementation of over 100 research projects. At the Center for International Research and Training in Agriculture, a company he founded in Iowa and managed from 1991 to 1999, he designed, implemented and evaluated numerous agriculture and environmental projects for the major agricultural chemical and seed companies in the world. In addition, he designed, implemented, and evaluated training programs for participants from a number of emerging democracies (19 countries).In 2004, Dr. Boukerrou was appointed Research Programs Coordinator at the Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University where he manages environmental related projects dealing with water, land and the coastal environmental. Dr. Boukerrou serves as a Research Professor in the Department of Geosciences at FAU. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Business where he teaches global environmental management of air, water and land in the Executive MBA Program.

As a team leader and consultant on international development and education projects, Dr. Boukerrou provided services to Fortune 500 companies, international organizations (IFAD, IDB, GM, GEF) and government agencies (USAID, USDA). He has served in various capacities on over thirty Boards of professional and civic organizations. Dr. Boukerrou is currently a member of several organizations including the WaterWeb Consortium and the Inter-American Water Resources Network.
