Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma is currently working as professor of sociology at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), India. Trained as a statistician and demographer at the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai (IIPS), Dr. Sharma obtained his Ph.D. degree in sociology from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) in 1980. After working in the Operations Research Group in New Delhi for a short period, he joined IITK in September 1980 as a lecturer in sociology. Since then he has been involved in teaching, research and consultancy in the fields of environment, rural development, social movements and HIV/AIDS. He was awarded professorship of the Institute in 1993. He has published five books, guided more than twelve Ph.D. students so far and is known to be an excellent teacher on the campus. He has also published more than 75 articles in national and international journals. He is associated with a number of professional bodies as a member and is reviewer to many academic journals of repute. Dr. Sharma has also contributed to administrative activities of the Institute. The most important assignment in the Institute was serving as Vice Chairman, all India Joint Entrance Examination for admission to IITs in India for two consecutive years.
