Dr Jane Turpie is a senior lecturer at the Percy FitzPatrick Institute, University of Cape Town, South Africa as well as director of Anchor Environmental Consultants. She obtained a PhD in estuarine ecology and ornithology in 1994 before venturing into the fields of conservation biology and resource economics with the benefit of training by the Swedish Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics. She has specialized in the area of conservation economics for the last 13 years has and lectures in the subject for the Conservation Biology Masters Course at the University of Cape Town. She has a particular interest in aquatic ecosystems and environmental flows, and has undertaken numerous valuation studies for a variety of applications. These include valuation studies of the major wetlands of the Zambezi basin (Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique), the Rufiji River floodplain and delta (Tanzania) and the Okavango delta (Botswana). She has recently assessed the impact of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project on intangible values associated with the downstream rivers. She has also developed a framework for integrating ecological, social and economic criteria in the allocation of water to the environment in South Africa, and is involved in projects that integrate economics into conservation planning. Dr Turpie is author of 30 scientific papers, several book chapters, and over 60 technical reports.
