Biography:

Joel Heinen is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at Florida International University in Miami, FL, USA. He received his Master’s from Virginia Tech and his PhD from the University of Michigan. Dr. Heinen's research is in the area of international biodiversity conservation policy, especially focusing on aspects of protected area management. He is particularly interested in the implementation of conservation treaties, the formulation of national conservation policies and programs and park/people relations in developing countries of Asia. Dr. Heinen has extensive international experience, especially in South and Central Asia. He is an invited member of the World Conservation Union's (IUCN) Species Survival Commission, The World Cultural Council, the U.S. National Ramsar Committee and the Mountain Forum.
