Biography:

John has 12 years of experience in the energy and mining industries, at the corporate level in strategy development, policy formulation, and planning, and at the operations level in project development, implementation, and management.

John has successfully led a range of projects through all stages, from project ideation and development to completion. He continually demonstrates his ability to achieve results in challenging situations. His logical and analytically rigorous approach ensures thorough, thoughtful assessment and advice which has contributed to his success as both a team leader and team player on a variety of national and international projects.

Before IISD, John worked as an Associate for the Macleod Institute, as a Project Manager for Geomatics Data Management, and as a Geologist/Geophysicist and Project Manager for Geomaque Explorations Ltd. Belloy Petroleum, Husky Oil Operations, and the Geological Survey of Canada.

John is the President of Van Ham Resources; an Adviser for the Energy Information Center, and a Past Executive Board Member of the New Energy Resources Alliance.

John has a Masters Degree in Environmental Design (Environmental Science) from the University of Calgary (2002). His thesis was “The Critical Success Factors for the Commercial Application of Emerging Energy Technologies”. He also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (Double Major in Geology and Geophysics) from the University of Calgary (1994).

John’s career objective is to help make Canada a world leader in clean energy production and use.
