Biography:

Sudhir Chella Rajan is a member of the faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He has been a Senior Fellow at Tellus Institute where he led the Global Politics and Institutions Program. He has an extensive 20 year research background in transportation, energy systems, and the institutional and political context of environmental policymaking. Dr. Rajan is broadly concerned with the interactions among social, political, technological and environmental factors relating to sustainable development. His research has included energy and environmental scenario analyses, studies on the politics of power sector reform in developing countries, and analysis of institutional reform measures to reduce corruption. Dr. Rajan's current research focuses on the social and institutional conditions needed to form a global political community with a clearly articulated collective interest in the environment, equity, and human development. This will involve exploring how networks of inter-personal trust can be formed at multiple scales and what is required to create new local and global institutional arrangements that can sustain legitimate and effective democratic politics. Prior to joining Tellus Institute, Dr. Rajan worked at the California Air Resources Board, the International Energy Initiative, and as an independent consultant for the United Nations Development Programme.
