Bacchus1314129652.jpg Module: Climate Change and Wine Curriculum Module Last Updated on 2011-06-08 00:00:00 SUMMARY In this computer exercise, students will compare and contrast satellite and ground data for temperature in northern California over several decades and extract trends about climatic regions for wine-grape production. The satellite data, which we provide in an Excel spreadsheet, contains four 1° blocks along a longitudinal transect from the coast of California to the mountains. The ground based data in the spreadsheet are from four weather stations (Ft. Bragg, Napa County Hospital, University of California at Davis, and Colfax), each representing one of the blocks along this transect. For each block and station, we calculated the Winkler Scale, a technique for classifying the climate of wine growing regions in which geographical areas are divided into five climate categories based on degree days. Plotted are changes in the Winkler Scale for the... More »
LA climograph.PNG.jpeg Module: Advanced Topics in Remote Sensing Last Updated on 2011-06-07 00:00:00 SUMMARY Data Description Landsat Data has been prepared for each participating campus. Using the 30 yr Landsat period from 1975 to 2005, data can be used to examine changes in land cover, abundance of vegetation in the summer (peak abundance) and relate changes to climate conditions. Each Landsat scene covers an area approximately 185 km x 185 km and the data is provided in a digital format. Landsat data from 1975 to 2005 was acquired for each campus location. Data consisted of an image from 1975, and one each from 1990, 2000 and 2005. Summer images were selected to acquire data near the time of maximum vegetation cover. CAVEAT: data was not acquired on the exact same date each year due to cloud cover or other data problems however, all images were collected within the same very small time frame. Landsat 1975 data was acquired by the Multispectral Scanner (MSS), the... More »
Drought-Livestock-Somalia 490px FEWS-NET.jpg Drought in Eastern Africa Last Updated on 2011-01-29 00:00:00 More Frequent Drought Likely in Eastern Africa The increased frequency of drought observed in eastern Africa over the last 20 years is likely to continue as long as global temperatures continue to rise, according to research published in Climate Dynamics. This poses increased risk to the estimated 17.5 million people in the Greater Horn of Africa who currently face potential food shortages. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of California, Santa Barbara, determined that warming of the Indian Ocean, which causes decreased rainfall in eastern Africa, is linked to global warming. These new projections of continued drought contradict previous scenarios by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicting increased rainfall in eastern Africa. This new research supports efforts by the USGS and the U.S. Agency for International Development... More »
